Film Deconstructions

Analysis of the opening Bonnie and Clyde
-1967
-Genre - Gangster

Started with the warner bors logo to indiciate to the reader that the film was made by this company. A photoslide was shown which included black and white photos. The use of the balck and white photos showed the age of the film and to set the time of the film. The only sounds that can be heard is the clicking of the photos changing. This is a foley effect. After a couple of pictures credits are shown of the director and actors because they are the most important part of the making of the film they are shown at the very beginning. The main actors are written straight away. The sequence of photos are shown for a quite a long time and pictures images of people back in that time period, most of the photos showed long shots instead of closeup shots. A soundtrack is finally introduced and then the pictures of Bonnie and Clyde, by each picture they have pieces of writing describing the charater, this is helpful for the audience to understand better especially if they have not heard of the people before. The title of the film is then pictured in striking colour compared to the background which stands out. The film then instantly changes to an extreme upclose of Bonnie, a main focus on her red lipstick whihc attracts the audience instantly. The shot then moves onto a close up onto the whole of her face in a mirror. Bonnie moves to the bed and a mid shot is used to picture this,Bonnie is banging against the bed in boredom, the audience gets a clear idea of this. Mid long shots show Bonnies naked body. The duo, Bonnie and Clyde are introduced by using a high angle shot picturing Clyde attempting to steal her car. The pair instantly have dialogue between them and in the next scene she quickly gets dressed to meet Clyde for the first time. There is a two shot/long shot of the two of them walking to down. In the next scene quite alot of closeups are used. A closeup of the pair dirinking some coke and closeup of the gun Clyde is carryuing around. The use of the closeups shows the intenseness the pair share and makes the audience really engage to what is about to happen.

New line Cinema is firstly introduced which is what the film is created by. As soon as the film starts to begin and before you can see anything police sirens are introduced. By the use of this sound instantly introduced you can tell what the genre of the film is. One of the main charcters, morgan freeman is introduced straight away. Morgan freeman is a huge star and so this shows that it will attract the audience to watch the rest of the film.

A fuzzy blured television screen is pictued straight away along with scratchy type music, this goes very well with the the theme of the genre and suggest mystery already. Pictures of drawings of cogs and mechanical pieces are introduced along with a heavy beating soundtrack. With all of these put together the audience already gets a feel of the genre of film. As the mechanical pictures are shown a letter is shown one by one which then introduces the name of the film straight away. Scratching electronic music is played throughout. As soon as this ends the first shot begins. A close-up shot of an ash tray and a hand holding a cigarette. The cigarette already symbolises rebellion aswell as the smoke symbolises mystery. The only sounds the audience can hear are police sirens concluding to the audience that the first shot is set in a busy area, maybe full of crime. Two charasters are then introduced straight away. The body language of both are very different from each other. The one holding the cigarette is very shakey and dressed very casual and dirty however the other man appears quite confident and dressed very formal. The clothes tell the audience alot about their class and may conclude what has happened previously. Pan shots of photographs and needles are shown, close-ups are used to show the audience how sugnificant these objects are to the film. A clever shot is used to show you are going back in time, it is speeded up to indicate once again it is back in time. To show where the next shot is taken a nurse is used to indicate that this man is in a hospital. The use of the nurse shows that it is very clear they are in a hospital. Dialogue is used between the nurse and man. A mid shot shows the man waiting for a lift and then a tracking shot is used zooming up towards the back of his head. Silence is used to give the effect that something bad is about to happen to this man.

Romantic Italien music is instantly introduced which already can indicate the genre of the film to the audience. A mid-shot of people getting flowers out of a floral van, the colours of the flowers are very feminine, pinks and whites are used which show that it is for a wedding of some sort. A pan shot is instantly used to show people getting ready and setting up the wedding. The audience can then hear phone buttons bein pressed, which is a foley effect, as you can hear them being pressed but not actually seen. A faded transistion is used from people getting ready to a wedding cake showing that it its deffinatly a wedding. Credits are being displayed along near the bottom/mid part of the screen reading in white italic writing. The use of the white italic writing gives a romantic feel to the film instantly. A mid-shot of a concerned womens face dressed in a wedding dress indicates she is the bride and looks outside the window as if she is looking for someone to arrive. In the next scene alot of 2 shots and over the shoulder shots are used between the family of the bride and the bride. The dialogue being used is very negative showing that something is wrong. A comparison shot is then used between the clean white wedding to a dirty desert with the men. One of the men is on the phone with the expression of being distressed. A soundtrack is introduced, thumping music which sounds like a band, alot of drum beating, this is very different to the beginning of the film and also shows another comparison. A tracking shot heading upwards towards the sky and then a blank background is shown with the title of the film in red. Extreme long shots of vegas are shown to set the next couple of scenes. Lots of tracking shots are used to show the scenery, almost used like a prop to them. A low angle is finally used of scenery alongside with credits.
